Creating the conditions for pupils with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) to thrive in the classroom

About this module:

In this module, we will consider how Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) can impact on pupil learning and emotional well-being. We will consider how we identify pupils with ADHD and the key cognitive, emotional and behavioural barriers to learning. By exploring the difficulties linked to executive functioning, emotional literacy and self-regulation we will consider a range of practical approaches to overcome barriers to learning and demonstrate how classroom practitioners, working in partnership with these young people and their families, can support pupils to achieve their full potential.

The sessions will include a range of practical strategies that can be adopted across the curriculum and with different pupils at different Key Stages to promote learning and inclusion.

The module is appropriate for teachers and teaching assistants across all phases.

Session One: Difficulties faced by pupils with ADHD will explore:

  • What do we mean by ADHD?
  • The key indicators we can use to identify pupils with ADHD/attention difficulties.
  • The barriers that children with ADHD face within the classroom.
  • The short and long-term impact of ADHD.

Session Two: Practical strategies for support within the classroom will explore:

  • Examples of good practice from a range of settings, curriculum areas and phases.
  • Developing an ADHD friendly classroom.
  • Specific strategies that can be adopted in all settings.
