How to use a visualiser to impact on students’ learning through meta-cognitive development and effective assessment practices

About this module:

In this module, you will be introduced to using a visualiser in this classroom. Whether you’re new to using this helpful tool, or already using one on a regular basis, we will learn about the benefits of using a visualiser both broadly and specifically to support assessment. Across the two sessions we’ll also model how, by using the visualiser, you can develop the meta-cognitive and self-regulatory skills that underpin successful learning.

By considering practical examples, we’ll explore structures for using the visualiser to model the assessment process, including how to complete an assessment successfully, how to assess others’ work and how to assess and improve students’ own work. We’ll offer some suggested guidelines for using a visualiser effectively and avoiding any pitfalls.

You will be invited to reflect on how you currently carry out these different assessment activities without a visualiser and consider how a visualiser could improve your teaching practice. You’ll be encouraged to try out different practical examples of using a visualiser between and beyond the sessions.

This module is suitable for teachers and classroom practitioners of all subjects. Examples are principally for Key Stage 3, 4 and 5 but can be easily adapted to all phases.
