Moving beyond the SEND label to understand cognitive functions and difficulties in the classroom

About this module:

In this module, we consider how SEND diagnoses such as dyslexia, ADHD, ASC, DLD and DCD have key cognitive function difficulties in common. Following a brief overview of the most common ‘labels’, we will move on to developing our understanding of how difficulties with language, working memory, processing and attention can affect learning. You will explore a range of strategies to support these cognitive functions and begin to consider how to apply them to your own practice with SEND learners.

This module is appropriate for teachers and classroom practitioners at all phases and in all contexts.

Session Two: Applying cognitive function support strategies to learning tasks will involve:

  • Choosing and applying strategies to a given task.
