About this module:
In this module we consider both the theoretical underpinning and practical application of scaffolding learning. The sessions will explore how scaffolding not only helps to reduce task load but also ensures that prior learning connects to new learning, reduces teacher dependence and supports the transition to pupil autonomy and independence.
We’ll consider practical strategies to incorporate into learning sequences to maximise knowledge gains and also support pupils in successful task engagement.
You’ll be invited to apply and refine your own practise in your own context both between and beyond the sessions.
Session One: Scaffolded learning sequences will explore:
- The theoretical underpinning of scaffolding to support knowledge gains.
- The principles of schemata development and the role of scaffolding in building on prior knowledge, reducing task load and building expert schema.
- The role of deliberate, intentional and considered planning in applying scaffolding strategies.
Session Two: Effective scaffolding methods will explore:
- Deploying different scaffolding methods at different stages of the sequence of learning.
- Hard and soft scaffolding.
- Scaffolding techniques for embedding and resurfacing knowledge.
- What is scaffolding – the importance of establishing a shared understanding.
- The underpinning importance of curriculum, sequencing and schema development.
- How deliberate and considered planning can be used to embed and resurface knowledge.
- How a range of scaffolding techniques can be applied at different stages of the learning sequence.
- Transitions from hard to soft scaffolding as pupils develop expert knowledge and independence.
