About this module

This module focuses on the core capabilities for building trust and connection to effectively engage and communicate with others, and introduces the importance of empathy. Explore a simple communication framework, applicable to all interactions, from those with students, to colleagues and parents, to help create genuine two-way dialogue which is transparent, powerful and drives better outcomes. Learn helpful tools to facilitate deeper listening and effective questioning to build connection and rapport, and to help you get your message across in a way that engages others.

Informed by University of York Professor, Rob Klassen’s research into the non-cognitive attributes (or psychological characteristics) that are important for teacher effectiveness. Empathy and communication is one of the key skill sets that he identifies.

Session One: Powerful Conversations will explore:

  • Understand the core foundations of a powerful conversation.
  • Consider how to build trust to unlock openness and honesty.

Session Two: Committed Listening will explore:

  • Understand how to listen so that the other feels truly heard and understood.
  • Explore some simple frameworks for deeper listening and effective questioning.

Session Three: Speaking with Authenticity will explore:

  • Consider how to get your needs and message across in a way that engages others.
  • Learn how to give feedback with balance and impact.
