Exploring the features of effective motivators in the secondary classroom.

About this module

This session explores those learners who ‘just do it’ - who work hard and behave well, without any apparent need for extrinsic motivators. We will look at what it is that motivates these learners and explore what we can learn from this to help us better support learners who are not intrinsically motivated. The session also looks at the features of effective motivators, examining practical ideas for creative, engaging ways to use ‘rewards’.

This module is suitable for teachers, early career teachers, ECT mentors, teaching assistants, learning support assistant and senior leaders supporting staff with behaviour.

What you will learn:
  • Explore why some pupils are intrinsically motivated to learn and behave
  • Examine self-determination theory and how it links to intrinsic motivation
  • Consider the key features of effective rewards and consider some creative options for motivators
